It all started when Buddy—an affectionate, scruffy little Terrier with a tail that wags faster than a hummingbird’s wings—was out for his usual morning stroll. Despite being on his best behavior, something unexpected happened. Another dog owner, frustrated by Buddy’s enthusiastic greeting toward their timid pup, uttered the words no dog lover ever wants to hear: “Bad dog!”
Poor Buddy was crushed. Terriers, after all, are some of the most energetic and curious dogs around. Their eagerness to explore often means they investigate every interesting scent and greet new friends with gusto. For Buddy, racing up to a potential new friend was a perfectly normal, well-intended hello. But in that moment, his big-hearted cheer was mistaken for mischief.
Later, at home, Buddy seemed to carry an uncharacteristic sadness in his eyes, as if that one disparaging remark cast a shadow on his normally bright spirit. Terriers might be resilient little adventurers, but they also thrive on positive reinforcement and affection from the people around them. It’s part of what makes them such loving companions.
